MIT “impressed” at Lisbon’s commitment to R&D, innovation
28/11/2009
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is very impressed by Portugal’s strategy to invest in research and innovation, MIT president Susan Hockfield said this week on a visit to the Portuguese capital.
“At MIT we’re very impressed at the commitment of this country to build its future through science and technology, research, discovery and innovation,” said Hockfield at an energy seminar at Lisbon’s Technical University.A priority MIT research area is to find ways of easing growing energy shortages, said Hockfield, and Portugal’s government, laboratories and technology firms have become “excellent global allies” for the institute in this quest. In reply, Portuguese State Secretary for Energy and Innovation Carlos Zorrinho said MIT’s praise is “a cause for pride”. Lisbon’s “win-win” cooperation accord with MIT is turning Portugal into a living laboratory for the US institute and Portugal gets essential expertise from the American organisation in return.
