Frederick Jacobson - (Sweden) Algarve Open de Portugal Vale do Lobo - Algarve - Portugal - 17th to 20th April, 2003 The opening day of the Algarve Open brought to the top of the scoreboard the winner of the Hong Kong in December the Swedish golfer Federick Jacobson who created a course record with a round of 64. Two strokes behind him was the Englishman, Greig Owen with a score of 66. Lying in tied third place were Bradley Dredge from Wales (the recent Madeira Open winner), Carlos Rodiles from Spain, both with 69 strokes. The second round accompanied by an influencing wind factor brought the local Swedish favorite of Jarmo Sandelin to a best day score of 67. Lying second for the day was the German Marcal Seim with a 68. The combined leadership board ended with Grieg Owen on top with 136 strokes, followed by Marcel Seim with 139. Frederik Jacobson had slipped down with a round of 76 placing him in third place along with Carlos Rodiles. The cut placed many well know Volvo Order of Merit names out of contention for the third days play, which also including all the local national players. English golfer Richard Sterne achieved the lowest score for the third day at 69. Once again Frederik Jacobson came to the fore sharing the second best round of the day of 71 with Brian Davis from England and Maarten Lafeber from Holland. In the morning of the final day the leader board showed a group of some nine players within competitive striking distance of victory. Once again in top position was Frederik Jacobson with 211 strokes, followed by Welshman Jamie Donaldson and Englishman Brain Davis, both with 212 strokes. These players were followed by Marcel Seim and Richard Sterne both with 215. As the day progressed no new contenders appeared to join the top group. This band of players progressed through the afternoon heading for what seemed to be a possible play-off between Jacobson, Dredge, Davis, Donaldson and Owen. Towards the end Grieg Owen was the first to fall away leaving the other four golfers to battle for the first prize. On the 17th hole Jacobson then made a stunning chip to the green and scored an eagle. Although he lost a stroke on the 18th hole he turned in a card with a round of 72 that gave him the Algarve Open with a final combined score of 283 and 5 strokes under par. In tied second place with 285 strokes were Bradley Dredge, Jamie Donaldson and Brian Davis. The best round of the final day of 68 strokes was shared between Jarmo Sandelin, Bradley Dredge, Jamie Donaldson and James Kingston. Jacobson admitted afterwards that he felt confident during the four days play but tension really came to the fore on the final two holes! Once again the Open has produced some new names heading for the top 25 in the Volvo Order of Merit.

Jorge Papa as the Golf Director of the newly opened Morgado Course on the 1at of February returns to the Algarve after an absence of 11 years. He started his career in the golf world in 1983 at the Quinta do Lago Course near Almancil. In 1992 he joined Portugal’s premier sport organization, João Lagos, to assist in the golf division. Later he was given the additional responsibility for the tennis division and was actively involved in staging two Open Estoril International Championship events. In 1994 he was head-hunted for the then newly opened fashionable Peru Golf Course located just south of Lisbon, firstly as Commercial Director and later as also the Golf Secretary. The Morgado Course is located to the north of Portimao and the present access is from the road to Monchique. Shortly, when the work on the extension of the Lagoa-Lagos motorway is finalized, a closer access form the town of Portimao will be created. This championship course will be joined in the future by another attractive alternative 18-hole course in this approximate 1,000 hectare estate. Work on this second course is anticipated to start later this year. The idea of the owner’s is to create an exclusive and fashionable golfing estate supported by a 200 bedroom 5-Star Hotel (work scheduled to commence in 2003), a quality villa development, and a range of facilities that the size of the property more than adequately allows. In keeping with this approach the initial local Membership of the first course will be limited to a 100 golfers, whilst playing visitors with official handicaps will always be welcome. Jorge has many plans for the future, one of which is to start a golf school for young local boys and girls to encourage them to play or to think in terms of future employment in the golf world. On reception is the team of Magarida and Rebecca whilst Luis Rio handles the future reservations. On the course Edward, Orlando and Joao Ricardo take care of the buggies and Ranger work. Nuno Sepulveda who was trained in the UK is responsible for the greens and the fairways. Nelson Cavalheiro joins the Morgado Course as the resident Pro having originally been for many years at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Carvoeiro.

When the popular Kico Cabral of Palmares Course retired in the Spring he added to the several changes in Algarve Course Directors that have occurred this year. Sr. Miguel de Sousa is now the man in charge at the Palmares Course near Lagos. He joined the staff in the capacity of Commercial Director. Miguel hails from Porto in the north of Portugal and prior to moving to the Algarve. He had been working since 1996 in another division of the owning company Sonae, which amongst their many possessions they also own the Troia Golf Course south of Lisbon. His initial training for the organization had taken him to both England and California to learn the latest management and technical sides of specialized sport activities. It is always hard to step into the shoes of a previous very popular and successful Golf Director but Miguel brings with him enthusiasm and new ideas coupled with a very friendly approach. He has a major pet project which he is determined to make active this coming January. Based on his past experience he is very concerned with the encouragement and education of young children into sport. In the beginning of 2003 the Palmares Golf Course will have a Junior Golf and Sport Academy to attract youngsters. Miguel has the same staff headed by Regina on reception and Antonio as Course Controller. On the course there is a new Greenkeeper in the name of Nelson Silva working under the control of Eng. Henrique de Silva from the Troia Course. When Nelson recently joined Palmares he brought with him the latest USA technical knowledge of all matters connected to the maintenance of golf courses. Plans are for a new irrigation system to be laid in 2003 but work on this is not planned to interrupt the play. Encouraged by many players remarks that Palmares greens run fast and true, Miguel and Nelson wish to take their course to a higher level and their aim is to be rated amongst the top 100 in Europe. They already have decided advantages in other areas as the views of the ocean are panoramic, and as yet, there are no fairways lined with villas as planning permission for urban development has not been granted in the last 26 years!

The Millennium Course at Vilamoura which was inaugurated in the year 2000 and is firmly established on the Algarve circuit. With the opening of this 18-hole course it meant that the owners Lusotur became to leaders in the field with a total of four full courses within their estate. However, it is opportune to mention that a further and fifth course is already well advanced in construction. Sr. Eduardo de Sousa is the able Director of the Millennium Course. He took over the responsibility of this new course at its inauguration having been already managing the previous 27-hole Laguna. The Millennium is a combination of 9 new holes that meander skillfully through the pine forest to the north of the Clubhouse and 9 holes from the old Laguna. Eduardo is a home-grown having grown up near the town of Almancil. As soon as he was old enough he used to act as a temporary caddy at the The Old Course in Vilamoura and as soon as he left school became a permanent employee. In 1978 he was promoted to Caddy Master. In 1985, when Lusotur purchased the Pinhal Course (previously known as the Dom Pedro Course), he moved across to supervise the new course and a year later appointed as its Golf Secretary. With the opening of the Laguna Course in 1990 Eduardo took up the position of its Golf Director. Looking back over the many years at Vilamoura Eduardo is very appreciative of the changes that have occurred in the interim. In the 70s and early 80s, the playing service of the courses was not to the high standard that they now offer. Also, the early friendly and enthusiastic service by staff that golfers received was eroded. Due to the great advance in knowledge and equipment for treating courses the 90s was marked by their level of improvement. In the 90s the playing numbers raised significantly creating a new challenges for Eduardos team. This changing face has necessitated an ongoing programme of staff education to retain the quality of service that is so necessary in any tourist associated business. In the words of Eduardo a smile, friendly and warm, good application, it works well. Our job is to anticipate the needs and demands of visiting golfers. He firmly believes that only the happy marriage between these two essential qualities can work for the future of the Algarve and generally reward the players for their green fees. The Clubhouse for the Millennium doubles for the Laguna so Eduardo maintains two teams on the combined Reception Desk. For the Millennium course Aninhas heads Anna and Solage. For the Laguna course Francisca heads Luisa and Sonia. The Caddymaster for both is the well known Dimas who has been with Lusotur since 1976. He is assisted by Joaquim Figueirao, Hilario and Joao. The overall direction of the condition of the Course falls under Eng. Simao da Cunha, with Eng. Luis Alves as personally responsible for the Millennium. The pros are Abilio Coelho and Joaquim Catarino. The first of these two has been with Lusotur since 1978 and is very instrumental in coaching the successful Vilamoura Summer Golf School for young players.

At the end of last August, Antonio Cavaco moved to take up his new position as Director of Golf for both Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima Courses near Tavira. Judging from his past record he will quickly bring these two courses into the forefront of the Algarve golf scene, especially as Quinta de Cima is a Championship Course and plans are already in the making to involve the course in the top level of Portuguese tournaments. A powerful asset is their extremely attractive geographical and environmental location. The courses are laid out side-by-side in gentle rolling land dotted with almond trees. They are bordered in the south by a beautiful sandy beach and on the edge of a Park Reserve, yet they are within five minutes drive of the historic and architecturally attractive town of Tavira with two new good hotels with a further one soon to open. As a brand new course Quinta de Cima is still in need of some maintenance and adjustments but this weekend it will be the stage in which 30 national teams will be competing in the Portuguese Corporative Challenge Trophy. Antonio Cavaco places a lot of importance on his new Golf Academy which includes its own 3-hole practice course. This Academy is run by his two Pros, Willie Dhommee who hails from France and the Portuguese Sebastiao Gil. Both courses are run from the same Club House and to help run his office he has a Golf Secretary in the name of Antonio Jose Martins. The team on reception are Maria Jose, Joao Carlos, Henrique and Elsa. Both the Caddymaster Jose Alberto, and the Greenkeeper Eng. Paulo Dias, moved from Benamor course to join Antonio Cavaco.

The Director of Golf at the Le Meridien Penina Golf Hotel is Sr. Leonel Rio, who was appointed to his present position in 1991. The Penina was originally conceived and built by the John Stilwell family who invited Sir Henry Cotton to design the course and make it his home. In 1986 John Stilwell sold the Hotel to the UK Forte Group who subsequently in 1998 were bought out by the Le Meridien Hotel Group. This later Corporation has now passed into the hands of its present owners, the Nomura Bank from Japan. Leonel is a true example of a home-grown golfing career man as he was born in the nearby town of Portimao and his commercial history has been linked to the Penina for over 35 years. At the age of seventeen and never before having seen before the game of golf, Leonel had the opportunity in his school holiday to become a caddie in 1966 and in the same year in which the course was inaugurated,. This was the start of his love for golf. Although forbidden at that time by his employer to play on the courses he grabbed ever opportunity to learn how to swing a club and secretly practicing on less visible holes. Finishing his academic studies and to the complete surprise of his parents he became a full time caddie and later graduated to the Reception Desk. National army service took him away until after the 1974 Revolution when he returned to the Penina. His only opportunity was to join the administration department due to the golf section having lost all of its visiting players. The lack of Hotel clients at the time helped Leonel by giving him the opportunity to improve his game and reduce his handicap to below 10 and where it has stayed. As the tourist trade recovered and also the golf visitors numbers improved this gave the chance for Leonel to move back to the Golf Desk. He feels particularly indebted to the Forte Group during their ownership as they did much to advance his career and educate him in the qualities required in applying professional administration through teamwork. The new owners are following the same policy and this is truly reflected in the many complimentary remarks he receives from the players. Leonel enjoys participating in local competitions and has a crowded room at home with his trophies. His pride and joy to date was his success in taking first place in Cidade de Lagos Trophy in 1999, a fiercely competitive and exciting three-day Stableford event. The courses are in good shape and the Championship Course having been extensively renovated in the middle 90s with new irrigation system, new surfaces of tees, fairways and greens, and at the same time respecting the design and layout that was created by Sir Henry Cotton. A very important policy adapted by Leonel is that even on its busiest days that the maximum play time on the Championship Course must be kept down to 4.5 hours. He keeps two Rangers on the course with strict instructions to make players speed up their games and observe the play-through rules when necessary. Another policy much appreciated is applied to visiting players with golf ability and having no official handicap certificates. A short golf test is applied by one of the three Pros and its positive result will determine if the visitors can qualify to play the main course. Jorge Ferreira manages the Reception Desk with Águas, Maria Jose and Manuel as the helpful assistants. The selection and service in the Golf Shop is the responsibility of Isabel. Luis Domingos has been the Head Greenkeeper for over 20 years and has a team of 30 people with very up-to-date equipment to keep the courses up to the required standard. Leonel states, the courses have never been in a better playing condition. The three resident Pros are Robin Liddle, Jose Lourenco and Jose Marcelino. Robin who was Rookie of the Year in 1971 and the Pro at the Turberry Course in the UK was specially invited to the Penina by Sir Henry Cotton. Both of the Joses were at one time assistants to Sir Henry Cotton during the course of their respective careers with Jose Lourenco starting as Sir Henrys personal caddy in 1968. A quick mention when taking a lesson or just taking some swings on the Practice Area, you will find free fresh water on supply as an example of one of the many small but important gestures by Leonel.

Shortly after the Boavista course was opened in January of this year Antonio Castelo took up the post of Director of Golf. Previous to this appointment he was the Director of Golf at Vila Sol Course at Vilamoura since 1998. For those subscribers who have not read our Newsletter Nº 5, Antonio Castelo was educated in the USA and is a keen golfer and playing off 3. His immediate comment about the Boavista Course is that for good players it is somewhat tricky to play. The architect Howard Swan has used three elements to challenge the golfer, speed, contours and wind. The condition of the course is good in all respects and is maintained by Joaquim Costa who previously was working on the Pestana Courses in Carvoeiro, Gramacho and Pinta. The Golf Services Manager of the Boavista Course is Tony Walton whilst the Golf Commercial Manager is Dennis Garvey. The latter person had been previously a popular fixture at Palmares Golf Course for so many years that there is not one golfing resident in the area that does not know. It is possible that partially because of this person that the Club membership of Boavista has in a few short months already risen to 290 playing members. The Course has also been readily accepted in the golfing world with several events lined up for the next couple of months and to the end of this season. The temporary Clubhouse is with a permanent building which should start construction towards the end of this year. The reception staff consists of Charlotte (Charley), Tania and Andrea. The Buggies and Carts are looked after by Howard, Gert, Tiago and Antonio.

Our sympathy goes out to everyone at Vale do Lobo who had worked so hard to create a memorable Algarve Open for 2002. The considerable financial investment and hard work was to be severely blighted by the exceptional bad weather, shortening the event and forcing a sudden death playoff. The occasion marked the emergence of a new name to add to the list of past Open Winners – Carl Pettersson of Sweden. During the month of April the long anticipated purchase of the Alto Golf Course was completed with the UK based company, Wykeham Securities, taking the winning place. The rumor has it that the new owners acquired this attractive product for a very favorable price. This year so far has seen some changes in the names of local Golf Directors. At the beginning of the year Antonio Castelo moved from Vila Sol to take up the same position at Boavista Course. A few months ago Billy Sim parted company with Parque da Floresta. The Director of Golf, Christopher Stilwell, has very recently made an unexpected departure from the Alto Club – and the season is not yet over!

Golf Director John Pinckney joined the Vale do Lobo Resort two years ago. He brought with him not only his love for the sport but also his considerable business experience. As a youngster he had by the age of 15 reduced his handicap down to a proud 1 stroke. After leaving school, circumstances took him in another direction and before long he was making a name for himself in the financial field of the City of London. As is generally inevitable in life, John had to face another change in direction and decided to return back to the world of golf where he keenly admits he should have stayed from the beginning. Prior to joining VLD (as it is locally known), he held senior management positions in both the Brocket Hall Golf Club owned by CCA, and the Hertfordshire Golf and Country Club owned by American Golf-UK Limited. John was quickly introduced to local event problems shortly after joining VDL when he was involved in the organization of the The Skins. This event took place during unusual drastic weather conditions that caused for some delicate handling. John is enthusiastically looking forward to the possible new challenges presented by the Open with its 135 top players on a course which spreads itself across the two by combining a selection of the best scenic and most challenging holes. Some other temporary topographical adjustments have also been necessary to ensure that all the facilities that the players expect during the course of the competition are on hand. John considers that all is in place and the course condition meets the high level expected by such an international event. As to the future there are lots of plans. A programme of works will upgrade the Ocean Course and there is also an additional third course planned together with a 5 Star Hotel. John firmly believes that the future of the Algarve is closely tied to further premium developments being created in order to be in harmony with the international market trends. Carlota Rodrigues is Johns right-hand and joined his team just some 5 months ago. Carlota brings some formidable qualifications besides her attractive presence. This young lady has a degree in Golf Management & Teaching she acquired in San Diego and on the course she plays of a solid 4. In conversation she mentioned that she also enjoys a good game of tennis! John, Carlota and the Resident Pro Stephen Walker, are heavily involved in promoting golf to local youngsters and this is kindly sponsored by VDL. Every week for a period of four months a group of selected 16 youngsters ranging in age from 11 to 15 are taught the basics and then introduced to the physical side of the game. Stephen is the son of Janet Walker who many golfers will remember from the 70s and 80s as the Golf Secretary for over 16 years. The enthusiasm and input of this team will undoubtedly be proven sometime in the not distant future! The constantly busy spacious reception desk is managed by Hermani Estevao who is assisted by Telma, Andre, Sandra, Ricardo, Rita, Anicieto and Victoria. Together with the pressure of the many visitors this team also copes ably with the three different and very active groups composed of resident VDL golfers. The state of the courses lies in the hands of Inacio Coelho who is answerable to the VDL overall Technical Director, Eng. Luis Matos. The Greenkeeper Sr Coelho brought with him 12 years ago the experience he had gained on similar courses of Quinta do Lago and Vila Sol and has now had the total responsibility for the upkeep of Vale do Lobos two courses for the past 4 years. Luis Matos has worked in Vale do Lobo as an Agricultural Engineer for 29 years and has been the Golf Course Technical Director for 20 years. He commented, We have a great team and our aim is to have the course in the best possible condition for the Pros to play in the Open, and in accordance with all the requirements laid down by the PGA. Sr. Coelho and his team have been working extremely hard and those efforts are clearly producing good results. In closing, I would like to mention to the many car enthusiasts that the VDL is also presenting a Vintage Car Exhibition close to the reception area during the Algarve Portuguese Open. Also, to the back of the Bar area there is a permanent collection of memorabilia devoted to the history of the Courses and particularly to the architect, Sir Henry Cotton.

In May of 1981 Francisco Cabral (Kico)took over from Antonio Pontes in the direction of the Palmares Golf Course near Lagos on one of the most attractive courses in the Algarve. The course is designed so that it runs southwards from the crest of the Meia Praia hill down to holes constructed on top of the sand dunes and then back up the slope to the Clubhouse. Whilst playing their round the players have magnificent elevated views over the ever changing blue of the sea in the Bay of Lagos that stretches endlessly to the horizon. The timing of the opening of the course in 1976 was unfortunate as tourism had yet not recovered from the dramatic events of the previous year. Added to this was the fact that the owner and his assets had been seized by the new and temporary government in Lisbon. Construction around the course of homes was obviously placed to one side and until this day the fact that there are only almond trees instead of residential property lining the fairways is another one of its natural charms. Unlike many of the other Algarve courses, Palmares has from the beginning had to look to the residential market to provide an important part of its income. Under the popular direction of Kico Cabral there is a very active local Membership which over the years has grown steadily alongside that of the visiting golfer. Kico acquired his love of the sport from his father who was a founding member of the Estoril Golf Course near Lisbon. His father was such a strong player that he was selected to partner the Prince of Wales on his visit to Portugal. The Prince of Wales was later to become the ill-fated King Edward VIII. During the twenty-one years at Palmares, Kico has seen three different owners which at times has required some deft footwork on his part to keep things running smoothly. The present owners are who Sonae S.A. have exciting plans on the drawing board which will undoubtedly change this serene and scenic course. Looking back Kico considers that the progress of golf in the Algarve has been in a wise way and at a pace that has fitted in with what the rest of the development of the Algarve. To assist in this he has been an active member of the Algarve Golf Courses Association, having been its past President and generally influencing its progress. Over the years Kico has built an experienced team that is lead by Urbano Aguas and Miguel Sousa, the Commercial Manager. A recent third member of many years standing was Dennis Garvey who has just recently moved to another course near Lagos. Regina is the Head Receptionist with Sandra, Monica, Rita and Magarida to assist. Buggies now fall under the responsibilities of Antonio Correia, the Course Controller who has been at Palmares from the day it officially opened. The Greenkeeper Eng. Henriques da Silva has only recently joined the team. He brings considerable experience from his other courses which include Vila Sol at Vilamoura, Praia DEl Rey to the north of Lisbon, and Troia just south of Setubal. Another old-timer is the Head Pro, Luís Espadinha, who has been part of the staff from the day it opened. The Assistant Pro is the well known Jose Dias who is at present rated 4th in the General Portuguese Golf Order of Merit, and placed 3rd in the Portuguese total winnings list. He will be one of the Portuguese contingent taking part in the Algarve Portuguese Open at Vale do Lobo this coming April. Prominently above the desk in Kicos office is a framed photo of the late Sir Henry Cotton. He was to Kico more than his a close personal friend for in his words he was his guiding light. This fact coupled with his membership of St Andrews will hardly keep Kico from disappearing out of his beloved golfing world!

THE www.algarvegolf.net - THE INTERNET SITE FOR ALGARVE GOLF This site which is one of the sites of the Portugal-info Network went online in 1998 in a different format. It was early days for the Internet in the Algarve and we as a company were at the time only one year old. We approached at that time one of the important local Hotel Groups and asked them to back our idea of having a comprehensive site to cover the golfing world of the Algarve. Their response was enthusiastic but with their limited experience of the Internet they were understandably reluctant to risk any investment to cover the construction costs. We decided to invest ourselves in the idea; coupled with an agreement from the Hotel Group that the site would be designed to help fill their bedrooms with golfers. When the site was online they would act as Sponsors and cover the running costs. From our statistics we are led to believe that the site very quickly became a solid success. Unfortunately, the site failed to grow in its design as the Hotel Group continued to financially sit on the fence and in the early autumn of year 2000 the Group changed their marketing policy and the Sponsorship was terminated. The situation now allowed us to completely re-design and greatly enlarged the content of the site. The new site was placed back online in February of 2001 and incorporated many of the initial disregarded ideas, including the concept of this newsletter. As we continue to be fed with many e-mails from the visitors, we are constantly reviewing and updating the information and when necessary adding additional Web Pages. One interesting statistic for those inclined! The site from February to December registered in its ten months of existence over 41.000 “unique visitors”. Compared to some major golfing areas this figure may be minuscule. However, in relation to the annual total number of golfers playing in the Algarve this number is beginning to have weight. This year promises a much higher total as the “unique visitors” figure for January is in excess of 6.000. Naturally, we have some major problems of a local nature to overcome. We believe that it is important for the visitor to be well informed about forthcoming events so that they may be aware of availability of any given course on any given day. As yet, regardless of the many expressions of goodwill and promises from Golf Directors there is no structure yet in place and we are seldom kept sufficiently informed. To emphasize our enthusiastic and sincere intentions in regard to the future of www.algarvegolf.net we have organized in June of this year our first Golf Tournament to take place at Tavira and details are given below. Our objective is to hold a friendly competitive event in a un-spoilt and historic area of the Algarve on two attractive courses that are not too well known to most visiting golfers. Participation is warmly welcomed so please visit our Web Pages as indicated below for further details. 1º Sotavento Trophy - Location: Benamor & Quinta da Ria Courses, Tavira Schedule: 4 days of different Tournaments Date: 9th to 16th of June, 2002

Half way through February the Lusotur S.A. hosted the 2002 Andre Jordan Trophy on its Laguna Course. This is an unusual and interesting competition which combines the very different skills of yacht seamanship with those of the golf course. The combined winner was Fred Ihmoff from Holland, with Georg Haindl from Germany lying in second place.
