From the 12th to the 15th of October the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) held their annual conference in Vilamoura in the Algarve. Some 600 golf exhibitors and more than 100 golf journalists met to promote the sport of golf throughout the world. The Portuguese exhibited with 50 stands to promote the 36 courses to be played in the Algarve. Following this event it was important to note that most courses have wisely reduced their discount rates for a round of golf in 2013 by several Euros. This is a positive move as all courses suffered in 2012 an increase from 6% to 23% in the local Tax - we believe this attitude will greatly help to maintain their position in the very competitive marketplace. It is great pleasure that we can announce that our local Algarve golf champion Ricardo Santos has just been awarded the prestigious prize of The Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. This voted award comes on top of his winning the 2012 Madeira Open, the first win by a Portuguese golfer in 20 years and he follows some famous names such as Sir Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin, Sandy Lyle, Jose Maria Olazabal, Matteo Manassero, Ian Poulter and Tom Lewis.

Shane Lowry - (Ireland) Portugal Masters Victoria - Vilamoura - Algarve - Portugal - 11th to 14th October, 2012 Irish born Shane Lowry became only the second player to win on the European Tour both as an amateur and a professional with his one shot victory at our own Portugal Masters on the 11th of October from Ross Fisher. He captured the Irish Open in 2009 after a play-off with Englishman Robert Rock but backed by a visiting vocal Irish contingent at the Oceanico Victoria in the Algarve on Sunday, the 25 year old came from four shots back to claim a narrow victory. The highlight of Lowry’s final round was undoubtedly a holed seven iron from 138 yards for eagle at the 11th – a stroke that propelled Lowry into a share of the lead – his play across the board and in a difficult windy setting was outstanding.

Ricardo Santos - (Portugal) Madeira Islands Open Santo da Serra - Madeira - Portugal - 10th to 13th May, 2012 Most of the outstanding sportsmen produce their best form when it most matters. Ricardo Santos was to prove that he is a man for the big occasion when he stormed to victory in the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal scoring a magnificent 63 in the Sunday final round. Ricardo Santos of Portugal came from behind in the field to win his first European Tour Event on May the 13th in Madeira. He starting the final day day four shots off the lead held by Carlos Del Moral. The 29 year old Ricardo ruthlessly slashed the Spaniard’s advantage with four birdies in his first eight holes, leaving him neck and neck with a competitive Andreas Hartø for much of the back nine holes. When his fellow competitors started to fade, Ricardo began to show true form by posting two more birdies at the 12th and 13th holes and moved into the lead. A birdie on the 16th was followed by another at the par three 17th where he holed a snaking 40 foot putt to all but the guarantee victory. To the delight of the crowds gathered around the green on the 18th, he hit his second shot to two feet and holed out with another birdie to set a new record low total – 22 under par and 266 for the event. Ricardo is the first Portuguese player to win a European Tour event on home soil, and the first Portuguese winner of any European Tour title since 1992. This win took Ricardo Santos to 683rd place in the World Rankings.
