December and January in the Algarve are attractive months for golfers as they often have the luxury of thinking that as they play their round that the golf course may belong to them due to the lack of other visible players! The weather is obviously variable, sunny or rainy, and normally quite pleasantly warm for the time of the year, which is a great attraction in comparison with northern Europe. Many of the courses still offer Twilight rates which will start at a time that normally guarantees a full round of play. These discount rates range from as little as € 25.00 up to € 71.00 depending on the chosen course. Alternatively, courses are also offering during the winter period the 2 players and a Buggy at discounted rates from € 68.00 up to € 158.00.

The Portugal Masters held on the Victoria Course in Vilamoura enjoyed good weather but with some wind gusts over the weekend. The winner was David Lynn from England with a one stroke lead from Justin Walters from South Africa. On the last day he came from six stokes behind to snatch the win from a bunched up pack of several players all within reach of victory. Lying in equal third place was Stephen Gallacher, Paul Waring and Bernd Wiesberger just a stroke behind from Justin Walters. From the starting field of the six golfers in the Top 50 in the World Ranking only Jamie Donaldson from Wales was in the finishing top 10 at equal 6th place. On the Saturday Scott Jamieson from Scotland was just beaten in his magnificent round attempting to be the first player to break the magical 60 stroke mark on the Tour by scoring a worthy 60 on this third round. Unfortunately for the local Portuguese golfers not one of them managed to make the cut. The possible exception was the Spanish player Alvaro Quiros who is a previously winner of the Portugal Masters and has now taken up position of being the resident pro for the Victoria Course. He finished in a competitive 22nd position by unfortunately dropping shots on his last day. The Quinta do Lago North Course will be closing as from the 18th of November for a period of about 12 months whilst some reconstruction and improvements in maintenance are implemented. The Quinta do Lago South Course will continue operating as normal.

Paul McGinley, the next Ryder Cup Captain for Europe holds regular open-air golf clinics at his state-of-the art Academy at Quinta do Lago. Jose Ferreira heads the everyday running of the academy. The latest addition is the TaylorMade Fitting Centre and the first one of its kind in Portugal. After your swing has been analysed, the golfer is fitted out with a bespoke set of clubs that take account of the individual quirks and enable players to hit the ball just that little bit farther and straighter. All professional golfers have fitted clubs as a matter of course and extending this same technology to amateurs has many benefits.

Peter Uihlein - (USA) Madeira Islands Open Santo de Serra - Funchal - 16th to 19th May, 2013 For golfer Peter Uihlein from the USA this win became his very first European Tour victory in 16th participation and also moved him into the Top 150 in the World Rankings. It was a close thing at the end until his nearest challenger Morton Orum Madsen from Denmark scored a double bogey on the last eightieth hole. The 23 year-old certainly is showing a lot of early golf promise.

Scott Jamieson - (Scotland) Nelson Mandela Championship South Africa - 6th to 9th December, 2012 This was Scott Jamieson first win on the European Tour after participating in 65 events and brought him a European Tour exemption until the end of the 2014 season. Importantly this was only his third victory after turning a Professional. It was a well won as he had to fight off both Steve Webster and Eduardo De La Riva, all three golfers having finished 7 under. Eduardo De La Riva was the first to fall away when he bogeyed in the first hole playoff, Steve Webster fell on the second hole.
